It’s summer and the goal is to keep your home cool without incurring an insanely high electric bill. Here are some tips on how to keep your home cool without cranking the A/C up to full blast:
Keep Your Blinds Closed
The greenhouse effect is real! When sunlight and heat get trapped inside your house through the windows it’s never any fun. Keeping your blinds closed during the day can reduce the temperature by more than ten degrees.
Open the Windows at Night
On average, the temperature at night during the summer stays around 70 degrees on Long Island. Instead of running the A/C, keep windows open and let the fresh, cool air circulate through your home. Make sure to keep doors in your house opened as well to prevent the air from getting stuck in one room.
Run Appliances at Night
Your washer, dryer and dishwasher all emit a lot of heat. Run these appliances during cooler hours of the night when possible so you are not adding more heat to an already hot temperature.
Use the Grill!
It’s summer after all! Grilling food outside instead of using the oven or stove can help keep your home cooler.
